[Review] Game Dev Tycoon: Two blokes, one game.


Tycoon Games With No Social Interaction? Sign Me Up

Founded in 2012 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Klug, Game Dev Tycoon is their company’s first release into the world. While on the tin it may seem like a carbon copy of the supposed inspiration behind it, Game Dev Story (by Kairosoft), Greenheart games set out to make a much more realistic game, with choices making more of an impact on your experience.



This is not the new Farmville, but bitch, it could be.


A typical business simulation, where you start out with nothing and climb the ladder to victory. This time you start out in your 80’s garage, and attempt to gain your place in video game Dev history. You can train your character in design, research and technology in order to increase the quality of future games. You can research different advancements to create bigger, more enjoyable games for your fans. The steps to create your games are simple, in the pre-development stage you must name your game, choose the genre, platform, type of game and what audience you’re aiming for. Later on in the game you can unlock larger game projects up to triple A titles. The next steps in development are sliding options, and your decisions effect how much time your team spends on various aspects of the game, and these all combine together in differing combinations to create the overall quality of your game. Certain combo’s are more effective than others, so keep a notepad handy. Or if you’re easy going there are game-guides online.




What I really enjoy about this game, is that it removes the ever irritating element of social reliance. You know that person. They’re on Facebook, and they still send you game invitations every friday, begging you to tend their crops, look at their dragon collection, join them in a game of repetitive, strained co-dependent and semi-whiny requests batted back and forth between each other like some sort of tennis match formed in the fires of social interaction hell. Thank you Greenheart games, for giving us another addictive little tycoon game, where I don’t have to play social butterfly to get ahead. There aren’t any gold coins to pay for, it’s all good, honest, single-player fun.




It’s brightly coloured, has some semblance of character customisation and features a snazzy and upbeat soundtrack. This game is incredibly easy to pick up and understand. All in all it’s very user friendly, but it could have done more to push boundaries. It may as well have been a a carbon copy of Game Dev Story, because Game Dev Tycoon doesn’t push the boundaries at all, and offers nothing new to seasoned business simulator fans. It does have some nice Easter eggs, and the fact that they created a free demo for people to try gets them brownie points from me.

What undermines this game, however, is it’s rating system. Your game will be rated against the game you last created, so you must aim for steady and continual growth instead of reaching for the stars with each game. This isn’t clear at first, and once you start discovering how to make good games, you end up confusing yourself. The review system means that if you make two superb quality games, in the confidence that they’ll both be great successes one after the other. One will flop. This creates a great sense of anger and frustration.

It’s a pleasant looking, fun yet frustrating little game that’ll earn it’s keep in your game library. However, despite getting some fundamental aspects of the game so very, very right, it brings nothing new to the table and the reviewing system could be better thought out. It’s met good reviews so far, and despite being unoriginal it offers a whole lot of fun. Value for money? You’ll get your monies worth out of this game if you’re a Tycoon fan, but it’s no Theme Park World, that’s for sure.
